Probably the very first major event in D-Day was when around 17,000 paratroopers flew in, on to the beaches of Normandy, France. After that, the Orne Canal and Bridges were secured by British airborne troops.
The Turning Point

The one main turning point in World War II and in the Normandy Landings was the liberation of Paris. Paris was liberated in late August of 1944 by the Allied troops. General Dwight D. Eisenhower was one of the main Generals involved in liberating Paris. The liberation of Paris not only gave the French a morale boost, but it also gave a morale boost to all the Allied forces and the U.S.
